Former NBA Commissioner Says Lakers GM Panicked in Chris Paul Deal

The former NBA Commissioner says Lakers GM panicked when Chris Paul going to the Lakers was a possibility. David Stern randomly joined a podcast to discuss a variety of topics including Chris Paul, who was a name that could have gone to the Lakers roster back in 2011.

According to the ex-commissioner, there was an attempt to redo the deal but Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak “panicked” and send Lamar Odum to Dallas so the deal could not be completed.

“We really thought that Houston would be ready to part with Lowry, and we had a trade lined up for Odom that would have gotten us a good first-round draft pick. Not we, but my basketball folks,” said Stern.

“But Mitch Kupchak at the time panicked and moved Odom to Dallas. So the piece wasn’t even there for us to play with at the time. So that was it — just about what was good for the then-New Orleans Hornets.”

Stern said this on the Nunyo & Company Podcast. One hour and twenty-nine minutes into the podcast, Stern discussed what went wrong in that deal.
